30th April - Robert Parker
Partner Baca Architects and Project Leader of the LifE Project
"The LifE Project - Long-term Initiatives for Flood Risk Environments"

The LifE project, part funded by the Defra Innovation Fund, as part of the Making Space for Water programme will result in a guide to integrated zero carbon development and ecological flood mitigation. Hackbridge is one of the three study sites used to illustrate the LifE approach and demonstrates a typical brown field development susceptible to flash fluvial and urban flooding.

"Anything but Average"

21st May
Jonathan Sergison, Partner, Sergison Bates architects, Professor at Accademia di Architettura, Mendrisio, Switzerland
"Reflections on the house and the city"
This talk will draw upon personal readings of the unique urban character of London and the manner in which housing as type has evolved through history. It will make a case for subtle transformation rather than radical revision drawing upon the work we have undertaken from the scale of a single house to strategic planning investigations.

28th May
Alex de Rijke, Director, dRMM
"Naked House: 'off the shelf' can be fun..."
dRMM aim to produce useful architecture that is an expression and a critique of social and cultural production, using industrialized materials and processes. dRMM do not consider structural timber systems, recycling, renewable energy and low carbon to be the site of duty, but a site of dynamic design. 50% of the world’s energy use is embodied within the construction industry, our counter-contribution to this is the Naked House design, a sustainable, affordable, C02 negative, pre-fabricated timber system which is then digitally customised for individual pleasures.

4th June
Glenn Howells, Director, Glenn Howells Architects

11th June
Simon Allford, Partner, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
"It's Only a Box?"
An approach to prefabrication in housing. Exploring the new modular in construction: stacking large boxes within cities; placing boxes within buildings and endlessly relocating boxes. But those who live there aren't interested in construction what they care about is how we make homes.
