Competing Pressures: Balancing conservation and commercial viability

Redevelopment plans for Smithfield Market and the Southbank Centre have come under heavy scrutiny for their potential impact on the historic and cultural character of their surroundings. This free NLA breakfast debate will examine the challenges and opportunities facing architects and developers to balance historic and cultural character with development viability and the commercial requirements of the 21st century.

A series of leading architects, heritage advisors and other stakeholders will set out both sides of the debate, drawing on these specific development projects, as well as others from London and the UK.
