New Ideas for Housing London - Insight Study Overview

NLA’s Autumn Insight Study, New Ideas for Housing, explores what needs to happen in the capital to improve the speed, scale and quality of housing. Independent research, backed up by a major international ideas competition inviting innovative thinking from across the industry, form the basis of a public exhibition, publication and programme of events, taking place from 15 October - 17 December 2015.

London has faced a ‘housing crisis’ for over two decades – a crisis that at present levels of housing delivery can only get worse. Despite its longevity there seems to be a dearth of new thinking. We have a shortage of land, yet our thinking on density is basic at best.

We have a system where delivery is restricted by developers who, understandably wish avoid lowering prices if they flood the market. We have virtually no collaborative or cooperative housing; attempts to breathe life into the customised market have singularly failed. We are suspicious of modern methods of construction.

New Ideas for Housing explores what needs to happen in the capital to improve the speed, scale and quality of its housing supply, through comprehensive new research, supported by a major ideas competition in partnership with the Mayor of London, and three-month programme of events.

Independent research, conducted by NLA working with Claire Bennie, examines the current state of play in London’s housing supply, addressing the barriers around planning, land, funding, construction, procurement and design.

A major International Ideas Competition, in association with the Mayor of London, called for the industry to respond with innovative thinking to improve the speed, scale and quality of housing supply. Small-scale or grand in their ambition, when brought together, these ideas will make a significant contribution to the delivery of housing in the capital. 100 shortlisted ideas have now been announced, with the winning ideas revealed in October.

NLA have also invited submissions to a London Housing Showcase to illustrate the very best new London housing projects either in design, delivery or completed within the last two years.

In the Autumn, the results will be revealed in a public exhibition in the NLA galleries at The Building Centre, hosted from 15 October – 17 December, and in a high-quality publication, supported by a three-month series of supporting events.
