New London Awards 2017 Shortlist - Press Release

Thursday 8 June 2017

New London Architecture reveals 160 strong shortlist for the New London Awards, and invites Londoners to vote for their ‘People’s Choice’

New London Architecture (NLA) has today announced the shortlist for the annual New London Awards. Comprising London’s best new architecture, planning and development, this year’s awards see a record 160 projects across 15 diverse categories, from small community-led projects to major housing and masterplans.

In conjunction with the London Festival of Architecture, all Londoners, professionals and visitors to the city are now invited to vote for their favourite to win the coveted People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice winner, alongside all 15 Category Winners, will be announced at the Guildhall on Wednesday 5 July.

From the Design Museum to the Francis Crick Institute, Poplar Baths and Boxpark Croydon – the shortlist includes projects at all scales and from all corners of the capital. The New London Awards are supported by the Mayor of London and celebrate projects of the highest architectural quality that make an outstanding contribution to social and cultural life in the city.

New cultural venues on the Culture & Community shortlist include OMA’s new Design Museum in Kensington; The Green, a major new community centre for Nunhead in Southwark, by AOC Architecture; and the Belarusian Memorial Chapel in Woodside Park North London, the first wooden church built in London since the Great Fire of 1666.

Local authority housing estate projects feature prominently amongst those on the Housing shortlist, including The Nightingale Estate for LB Hackney, and Redbrick Estate for LB Islington, alongside taller residential towers such as the The Lexicon onCity Road Basin.

The shortlist also sees major Masterplans transforming swathes of outer London, including mixed-use Meridian Water in Enfield and South Thamesmead in Bexley and Greenwich, while smaller community led initiatives are represented in the Meanwhile category, including Grow Elephant, a community garden, right at the heart of major area of central London regeneration.

Last year’s People’s Choice was awarded to the as yet unbuilt Rotherhithe Bridge. Receiving an overwhelming number of votes from the joining two neighbourhoods and those further afield, the scheme was praised by voters for its green credentials and innovation, with ‘references to London’s heritage as a 21st century Tower Bridge’ whilst being ‘highly functional; enhancing communications and facilitating work and community links'”

This year’s New London Awards Category Winners and the People’s Choice Winner will be announced at the Guildhall on Wednesday 5 July. Special awards will include the New Londoner presentation to the person who has made the most significant contribution to the capital, last year awarded to Berkeley Group’s Tony Pidgley; the Mayor's Prize for the project that has most creatively responded to the ‘Good Growth’ Agenda, and the Ashden Prize, awarded to the most energy efficient project.

An exhibition of all shortlisted schemes will open at the NLA Galleries at The Building Centre, WC1 from 18 July.
