From the resurgence of Bankside as London’s new cultural quarter to the transformation of Peckham, the massive regeneration programme at Elephant & Castle, the creation of a new town centre at Canada Water and the ambitious plans for the Aylesbury estate, regeneration in Southwark covers some 40% of the borough.
The £4 billion social and physical regeneration programme is one of the most ambitious in Europe. Plans are underway to improve housing and infrastructure on the Aylesbury estate, with an extensive regeneration programme.
A masterplan is in place for Elephant and Castle, and the council has now appointed a developer partner to take it forward. The regeneration plans at Canada Water will deliver a major new centre for Rotherhithe, with new homes, a vibrant public plaza, and new landmark library. Southwark is at the cutting edge of innovative design, with examples such as The Shard by Renzo Piano and Herzog and de Meuron’s Tate Modern extension.
