Public London: Masterclasses with public realm experts

Broadgate Circle, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Piccadilly and Oxford Circus

To further explore the projects celebrated in NLA's Public London Insight Study and exhibition, NLA invited a series of public realm experts to lead special study tours exploring key new public spaces. A unique opportunity to gain insight into the formation of new public spaces, these technical masterclasses looked at the processes behind designing, delivering and maintaining London's urban realm. 

Attendees learnt more about Broadgate Circle with Broadgate Estates, Piccadilly with Atkins, or the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with LDA Design. Further information on these areas of major transformation can be found below.

Masterclass with Broadgate Estates: The Broadgate Circle, 12noon - 13:30
Led by Ross McQuillan, Portfolio Director, Broadgate Estates with Simon Swietochowski, Senior Architect and Declan O'Carroll, Director, Architect of Arup Associates
The changes to The Broadgate Circle, developed by British Land and GIC, the 50:50 owners of Broadgate, aim to dramatically improve and enrich the retail and civic provision at Broadgate, whilst enhancing the existing qualities to the circle. This masterclass will look at how pedestrian movement and visual connectivity between the multiple levels has been greatly improved.

Masterclass with LDA Design: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, 14:30-16:00
Led by Andrew Harland, Senior Board Director, LDA Design
One of Europe's most significant new parks, LDA Design have shaped 560 acres of new parklands out of former industrial wasteland. This masterclass will look at the four principles which formed the design: revitalisation of the River Lea, diverse ecology, urban entertainment and of course, the Park's legacy of the Olympics.
Meeting point: Entrance to the London Aquatics Centre (lower level - just outside the ticket desk), please arrive fifteen minutes before the masterclass begins for registration.

Masterclass with Atkins: Circus to Circus, 12noon-13:30
Led by Peter Heath, Design Director, Atkins
This central London area is one of the world's busiest spaces, with footfall reaching 700,000 people every day. Hear from Peter Heath, Design Director of Atkins (and Paul Reynolds, former Chairman of the Urban Design Group) on the innovative improvements to pedestrian movement and public realm within The Crown Estate’s recent Regent Street and St. James’s portfolio. The UK's first large scale, diagonal crossing across Regent Street and Oxford Street, pedestrianisation at the back of The Quadrant and the restoration of 2-way traffic to Piccadilly and St. James’s and the subsequent decongestion lessons of the surrounding areas, will be the focus of this masterclass.
