Discover London's latest architecture on the New London Walking Tours. Explore how the capital's buildings and streetscapes are changing through a guided walking tour of one of six Central London quarters - each distinct in their character and history. Discover major new architectural landmarks alongside lighter touch interventions, and how these projects are being embedded into and are adding new dimensions to the fabric of the city's historic urban context.
Walks take place on the second Saturday and now also on the last Wednesday of each month. Saturday tours will begin at 14:00 and last approximately two hours. All are on foot and are led by professional Blue Badge Guides. The cost per person is £15.00 and includes VAT. Pre booking is essential.
Saturday 14 November - Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is one of London’s planning success stories, a feat of civic transformation on a grand-scale. Only 26 years after construction began in 1988, it flourishes as the City's second financial centre. But there is more to the Wharf than commerce. It is a socially integrated district where people work, live and play - and with the arrival of Crossrail in the second half of this decade its future development is assured. Constructed in the open spaces of the former West India Docks, planners and architects faced limiting restrictions in the design and placement of multi-storey corporate towers. The Canary Wharf Tall Buildings Walking Tour takes a serpentine route from West India Quay though the development's public spaces, giving us the opportunity to consider the work of such architects as Foster & Partners, Cesar Pelli and SOM, the integration of transport, retail and residential, and the challenge of building surrounded by water. We conclude at Norman Foster’s spectacular underground station.
The tour will meet at 13:45 at West India Quay (DLR), the exit point on ground level on the waterfront. Please check the TFL website for travel information ahead of the date to ensure you arrive on time.
