Don’t Move, Improve! Open Day

NLA’s Don’t Move, Improve! Open Day takes place on Saturday 27 February 2016, and will offer FREE advice and inspiration to Londoners looking to extend their homes.

Architects and engineers will be offering consultations in the NLA galleries throughout the day; there will be talks on how to get started with your home extension, from design inspiration to gaining planning permission; and an exhibition of the capital's best home extensions projects. 
 
Style consultations will also be hosted by Heal's at their Tottenham Court Road store, where specialists will be offering free advice on interior design!

Bookings - important information - please read! 
 
- All events are free to attend, but we will be asking for voluntary donations to architectural charity Article 25 on the day. 
- Places are limited and booking is highly recommended. 
- Note that you will have to complete a separate booking for your consultation and for each of the talks.
- Due to the popularity of the event, we ask that you restrict your consultation bookings to a maximum of one architect and one interior design consultation.

Architect consultations at NLA 
 
Shortlisted architects from NLA's Don't Move, Improve! 2016 competition will be giving free 25-minute one-to-one consultations to anyone looking for advice on their own home extension - suitable for those who are well underway with a home extension or simply wanting some advice on where to start. 
 
Please bring along as much information as possible about your project on the day, such as plans, drawings and photographs.

Planner consultations at NLA - 
 
Come talk to a london planner to see what you could do to your home without needing planning permission (i.e under permitted development, and prior approval legislation), as well as for advise on the key issues planners will look at when reviewing applications.

Get design inspiration from DMI 2016 architects and clients, from spatial layouts to material palettes.
 
Keynote by Angela Brady OBE Past President RIBA, Director at Brady Mallalieu Architects and TV broadcaster; ‘Building the Dream’ ITV, ‘The Home Show’ Channel 4 and ‘Designing Ireland’ RTE.

14:30-15:30 Transforming your Home - Practical Advice -
Get practical advice for your renovation project, what must you consider during your home renovation to ensure a safe and successful project?

Style consultations at Heal's 
 
Heal's will be offering free 30-minute one-to-one consultations with specialists from their styling service. The Heal’s specialists will be available for advice on colour, texture and space planning with a focus on furniture, lighting and textiles.
 
You will be asked to provide a project brief one week in advance of the consultation. 
 
Please note: these consultations take place at Heal's, 196
Tottenham Court Road, W1T 7LQ (a 5-minute walk from NLA)

11:30 - 15:00 Little Architect, Family workshop to design your ideal home extension!

Little Architect, the Architectural Association´s education platform for teaching architecture in London’s primary schools, will join us to host a family event. Through a series of drawing sessions, Little Architect will discuss and share their creative and sustainable approach to architecture with the children and families in the NLA Galleries at The Building Centre on Saturday 27 February. Little Architect teaches school children aged 5–11 years how to observe, understand and enjoy the urban ecosystem to become active citizens in the future.

(15 children accompanied by an adult per workshop at a time maximum)
