A new exhibition, based on work produced for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) uses imagery and film to explore how the place where someone lives can affect the opportunities available to them, and the constraints they face during their lives.
Communities under pressure is the culmination of a three-year research programme into the dynamics of poverty and place by researchers at Sheffield Hallam University.
Part of the research involved commissioning photographer and filmmaker Andrew Robinson to work with participants to document people’s personal experiences of living on low incomes, in different deprived neighbourhoods.
The result is a moving and provocative portrayal of what life is like in ‘ordinary’ disadvantaged neighbourhoods, some of which are still subject to the after-effects of previous economic downturns.
