Sponsored and organised by AECOM, Urban SOS is an annual student competition created to engage students in the fields of urban planning and design, architecture, landscape architecture and engineering with the issues confronting modern cities and to foster a cross-disciplinary approach to the complex challenges facing today’s built and natural environments.
This year’s competition focuses on water in the urban context. Water, the world’s most vital resource, is central to every aspect of city life: from basic human sustenance and public health to environmental remediation and overall urban renewal. More information can be found at aecom.com/urbansos.
200 teams representing more than 140 universities drawn from around the world – from Madagascar to Massachusetts – participated. Students were asked to submit creative, yet viable, proposals for existing urban sites facing water-based challenges. Projects dealt with issues such as waterfront regeneration, sea level rise and climate change, water quality in urban areas, drought and scarcity, and potable water access.
Over this summer, submissions were judged by a series of interdisciplinary juries of designers, planners and engineers drawn from AECOM studios and offices worldwide. The final three teams will be presented at the NLA alongside the top 35 schemes The winner will be selected on the evening of November 10 in a crit session before a master jury at NLA. The winning team will receive a cash prize of £10,500, and a further £15,000 in-kind donation will be made by AECOM to help advance the project.
